南天は「なんてん」という名前の読みから「難を転じて福となす」ということわざと同じ響きであるとして、縁起物として親しまれてきました。
ほかにも松、梅、桜、楓などの柄が描かれており、松は「威厳」、梅は「学び」、桜は「潔さ」、楓は「吉兆」の意味を持つ吉祥文様です。
