Around the body are caligraphy in white over black

While done in a very traditional Chinese Ming style the fact that a round family crest motif is painted in makie on the back of the chair indicates it's Japanese origin

As the ink builds up it flows down the slope into the ink stones low basin collecting there for use in writing or drawing
