本書は、買い付けの先々に居合わせた人らを撮影したポートレート集です。「大きな家」にいた彼らに、購入した古物を使って、自宅のような振る舞いを演じるよう依頼します。しかし、当然うまくいきません。買い物中の、あるいは仕事中の彼らにとって、東洋人からの妙で、言語的な隔たりを感じるお願いに戸惑いを示し、度々、緊張や拒絶が生まれました。そうした感情の現れとして、本書にはブレを起こしている写真や、緊張の色が強く出ている表情があります。

本書は、動物たちの視点からアルゼンチンの小さな農場の生活を垣間見ることができます。地面に近い場所で撮影されたアングルが多いこれらのイメージ群は、鶏、豚、馬、牛などの動物たちの勇気、苦闘、冒険を描写しています。生まれたばかりの動物の姿や、遊んでいる光景、食べ物を奪い合うシーンを捉えており、寓話や古典的な絵本を想起させるこの物語の中で、作者はこれらの動物たちを個々の存在として描写し、生まれてから終わりを迎えるまでの彼らの生活を、感傷的でなく、直接的に表現しています。
