Drawers were quite rare in early Chinese cabinets so this piece is a more contemporary version of a classic Ming design
Originally used a food carrying box
with the right hand columns denoting decimals
the seat itself has a smoothed rattan inlay and they work perfectly as dining chairs
In most Chinese homes the altar to ancestors would double as a more general purpose storage cabinet and our version has two central doors as well as two smaller doors either side
