Shanxi Elm Buddha Cabinet d110 with ornate carving and studdedShanxi, circa 1860 This beautiful cabinet, with doors set centrally on small hinges and multiple frames and panels, is in a style referred to as a 'Buddha cabinet', produced specifically to hold a statue of the Buddha inside. Originally the doors and front panels would have been in a striking, bright red lacquer that contrasted with the black top surface. The drawers at the top and bottom would have been painted to pick out the deep relief carvings.
